Epilepsy is a neurological disorder that causes seizures which are a result of abnormal brain activity. This can lead to cognitive, emotional, and behavioral disturbances affecting memory, attention, cognitive functions and executive skills.

Typically a Neuropsychologist will assess an individual with epilepsy to understand how seizures and underlying brain abnormalities impact cognitive functions, such as memory, attention, language, and executive skills in order to manage these challenges associated with epilepsy and its treatment.

Cerebrovascular disease has an impact on the brain’s blood vessels which influences cognitive and neurological functions (for example, a stroke). These neurological impairments can cause changes in memory, language, attention, executive functions, and motor skills.

 A Neuropsychologist will study how cerebrovascular disease can lead to cognitive and behavioral change and aim to assess and rehabilitate individuals with such conditions.

Neurodevelopmental conditions form part of a group of disorders that typically become evident early in a individuals life, including autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Some difficulties evident include, language and speech, motor skills, behavior, memory, learning or other neurological functions

A Neuropsychologist will study the above conditions to understand their underlying neurological mechanisms and how they affect cognitive and behavioral functioning. They will then develop assessments and intervention strategies to study them and provide insights into diagnosis and treatment.

Neurodegenerative disorders are defined by gradual and progressive deterioration of cognitive and neurological functioning. For example, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, and various forms of dementia. Difficulties experienced include: memory, attention, language, and executive functions.

Neuropsychologist would typically study these disorders to understand their impact on cognitive processes such as memory, attention, language, and executive functions. They assess and monitor individuals with these conditions, aiming to identify specific cognitive deficits and design interventions to improve their quality of life.

Neuropsychiatric disorders include both neurological and psychiatric symptoms or disturbances which influence cognitive, emotional and behavioural functioning. For example schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and major depressive disorder.

A Neuropsychologist will assess neuropsychiatric disorders to explore the interplay between brain function and mental health to understand how changes in brain structure and function contribute to psychiatric symptoms and how these conditions can have an impact on cognitive processes, emotional regulation, and behavior. Assessment and treatment strategies often involve a multidisciplinary approach that combines elements of both neuropsychology and psychiatry to address the complex nature of these disorders.

Learning disabilities involve neurodevelopmental disorders which can affect emotion, learning ability, self-control, and memory. Individuals with a learning disability might experience difficulties relating to reading (dyslexia), writing (dysgraphia), mathematics (dyscalculia), or a combination.

Neuropsychologists can assess and diagnose learning disabilities by examining how these conditions affect various cognitive processes, including memory, attention, language, and executive functions. Understanding the underlying neurological factors and cognitive processes involved helps develop specific interventions and educational strategies to support individuals with learning disabilities in their academic and everyday lives.

Other diseases that affect the central nervous system (CNS)

1. Multiple Sclerosis (MS): MS is an autoimmune disorder that affects the brain and spinal chord. Some symptoms may include loss of vision, pain, fatigue and impaired coordination.

2.  Brain Tumor: is a growth of cells in the brain which has an impact on cognitive functioning as it places pressure on brain tissue. Symptoms may include strong headaches, blurred vision, loss of balance, confusion and seizures.

Neuropsychologists play a vital role in assessing and addressing the cognitive and emotional challenges associated with these CNS-affecting diseases. They help individuals manage their conditions and improve their quality of life.

A Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) can be defined as the disruption of normal brain function caused by an external trauma or jolt to the head. Due to damage to the brain tissue, neural pathways, and associated structures TBI consist of various cognitive, emotional and behavioural impairments. These impairments can range from mild to severe and may include difficulties with memory, attention, executive functions and emotional regulation.

Neuropsychologists assess and rehabilitate individuals with TBI to help them regain optimal cognitive and functional abilities.
